Foam Roofing Systems *Performance *Waterproof *Energy Efficient *Durable and Economic
SPF being applied over an existing metal roof. Why should you consider Sprayed Polyurethane Foam (SPF) insulating systems? The versatility, unique physical characteristics and impressive performance of Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) roofing systems provide a long list of problem-solving benefits that distinguishes it from other roofing material.
Seamless Flexible Protection Seams are one of the major sources of leaks in many roofing systems. Constant expansion and contraction of a building over time exposes these areas to relentless pressure that will eventually open up these seams causing leaks. SPF systems are totally seamless, eliminating a seam leak from your long list of worries. Taking it a step further, SPF's closed cellular structure does not allow water to travel laterally, like other roofing systems. Typical roofing problem areas, such as a roof mounted heating and cooling unit, penetrations, curbs and parapet walls are self-flashed during application. Foam flows around all protrusions forming a tight bond that seals off places where leaks can start. Because of these same qualities, future roof modifications, such as replacing vent stacks or other roof penetrations, can be easily accommodated. Because the SPF roof is lightweight and fully adhered, it can be applied over the existing roofing system in most cases. Workplace disruption is another major, but often overlooked, for the building manager or owner. SPF roofing is much less disruptive to the work or living space below since tear-off is minimal. No more exposing your buildings contents to the elements resulting in business interruptions. Also, projects can be completed more quickly because application is quieter, quicker and requires less labor.
Step 1: Clean and/or vacuum roof and apply primer.
Step 2: Apply the closed cell spray polyurethane foam.
Energy Efficiency SPF's closed cell structure stops air infiltration, the chief culprit of most energy loss. Because SPF is fully adhered to the roofing surface, there are no attachment screws providing thermal shorts that could rob energy efficiency from your building and no unsightly screws visible from inside the building. In addition to its other benefits, SPF is high grade insulation. A one-inch thickness has an insulating R-value of up to 8, higher than any other insulating material on the market. When you install SPF over an existing roof, you retain the pre-existing R-value, as well as adding to it.
Step 3: Apply acrylic base coat over foam.
Reflective, Durable, Protective Coating An important part of every foam roofing system is a high-quality protective coating. These coatings cure to form a seamless, flexible covering that protects the foam from moisture and sunlight. Plus, the reflective white finishes help make the system even more energy efficient. These highly reflective ENERGY STAR rated coatings reflect away as much s 85 percent of the sun's ultraviolet rays, keeping the roofs surface and the work or living space below more comfortable. This reflectivity pays big dividends on those hot summer days and the added insulation value of SPF provides huge savings in every season.
Step 4: Apply white reflective top coat.
The Finished Product! Did you know? » Many regional utility companies are offering rebates to building owners for the intallation of energy efficient roofing systems, such as SPF » Most typical roofing systems have thousands of linear feat of seams and hundreds of mechanical fasteners -- all prime canidates for future leaks » Polyurethane Foam's light weight can reduce costly structural requirements and it's superior insulating capabilities allow the building owner to downsize heating and cooling equipment without compromising performance » As the cost of heating and cooling buildings keeps climbing, many owners are choosing foam roofing because of it's outstanding insulating properties. Unlike other roof systems, the entire thickness of a foam roof is high-grade insulation.
